Fire in the Hole – Hearing Damage from Explosions

Hearing Damage from Explosions | Finch Consulting

In two separate cases, Finch acoustic engineering expert Timothy Ward was instructed in claims for hearing damage resulting from explosions in the workplace.

One case concerned explosions of hydrogen gas, said to have been a regular occurrence in a chrome electroplating process. The other involved the explosion of an aerosol spray can that had been subject to heat.

Working from first principles, Tim was able to predict the likely peak sound pressure and sound energy levels from the alleged explosions. He was also able to advise the Court as to the risk of hearing damage in each case, based on established damage risk criteria for impulsive sounds.
