Many industrial sites contend with dangerous substances and explosive hazards on a daily basis and are designed to do just that. However, time and maintenance can lead to dangerous situations if left unchecked. For example an Ex d rated junction box in a zone 1 area may have been damaged, painted or had grease applied which, unknowingly to the maintenance engineer, may have blocked the flame gap compromising its ability to prevent flame propagation.

Safety in hazardous environments is paramount. As industries deal with flammable and explosive materials, ensuring the safety of personnel and assets is a non-negotiable responsibility. The law within the UK covers this through DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations). These regulations are designed to protect workers and facilities from risks related to explosive atmospheres and dangerous substances.
DSEAR requires that, anywhere a potentially explosive atmosphere is possible through dust, vapour or mist, it is appropriately zoned and equipment for that zone is used within it. This equipment must be appropriately specified and maintained to remain in spec. This is typically called a Thorough Examination or CompEx examination, as this is the major competence framework accepted.
At Finch Consulting, we understand the importance of maintaining a safe working environment, and we are proud to offer expert, CompEx-trained personnel who specialise in inspections to ensure compliance with essential safety standards.
