The before

Following a network wide security infrastructure update to key gas transmission sites, a network wide review of DSEAR was triggered, with the main aim of ensuring Hazardous area classifications were correct and capture mechanical equipment in use for mechanical risk assessments. This covered approximately 130 sites nationwide, ranging from compressor stations (involving gas, hydrogen, diesel and hydrogen from battery charging) to simple block valves.

The during

We created a thorough plan of works to schedule the sites across the year, with a project manager arranging access and inductions for each site. For sites which were not manned this involved gaining access from the area manager, along with an escort.

For each site visit two engineers attended, a DSEAR surveyor and an equipment surveyor. The initial stage was to identify release sources and potential zones, and then the equipment that was within those zones. That equipment was inspected to ensure compliance, through a thorough exam.

Any non-compliances were identified and provided in a prioritised actions list, and this was worked through with the client.

The result

Each site was provided with an EPD including a marked-up drawing, and a detailed thorough examination report for all equipment identified within the areas. Any non-conformances were highlighted in a list, and a plan was made with the client for these to be resolved.
