We are considered as the ‘hub’, or the ‘core’ if you like, of all things Finch.

Together, we manage, coordinate, organise and support the very foundations of Finch Consulting. This can include anything from organising exhibitions, assisting at site inspections, scheduling diaries, recruiting new Finches, to ordering loo roll.

If you have a question, we’re your people, and if we can’t answer it, we will find someone that can.

So, what’s it like at the Finch Head Office? Well, it is very pleasant, very pleasant indeed. We are based in the beautiful historic market town of Ashby De La Zouch, in a modern office with Biophilic interior design that we call ‘The Nest’.

We have a training room which we hire out regularly, or use ourselves, and two other meeting rooms. Sometimes inspections of evidence or joint expert meetings are conducted here, and sometimes we host *Charm here, our company wide get-togethers.

Our office is open plan, which is perfect for keeping up with the busy pace of all the enquiries, telephone calls and visitors we receive. Our Directors sit with us in this office and our Consultants and Experts from all over the country pop in to see us often too.

Day to day, we’re here between 8:30am to 5:00pm-ish. The ‘ish’ is because we have a ‘freedom with responsibility’ philosophy here: as long as you do your work diligently, to the expected quality and within the agreed timescales, you can do it in a way that works for you. So, some of us start earlier, some of us finish later, but there’ll always be someone here during those core hours.

Our ‘phones are busy ringing and the door is busy buzzing throughout the day and any one of us may answer it. We don’t just support the business, we support each other.

We often get requests to the support team for travel or accommodation from our experts and consultants as their work takes them far and wide. Some of the arrangements can be rather complex depending on location, logistics and availability and I personally quite enjoy organising some of the more challenging requests (like trips to USA, Pakistan, Isle of Man or Austria).

My first task each day is checking my emails (we all know that solicitors, and experts for that matter, don’t sleep!) and then working out my priorities which could be formatting and proofreading a report with a Court deadline, printing and compiling a bundle, providing dates for trials, acknowledging instructions, producing estimates or issuing invoices. I also regularly check what the experts are up to, making sure that they’re on schedule, giving them reminders and assisting them with anything that can help progress their cases, and of course just checking in with them for a natter and to make sure they’re OK.

One of my favourite things to do is to assess the enquiries that we receive and think about who might be most suitable to put forward in terms of expertise.

I really enjoy the conversations with our clients, finding out more about the case and then discussing it with our experts to see who is the best fit.

Then of course, setting up the file on our systems which includes a CRM (customer relationship management) system, a document management system and a time/billing system.

We have a huge variety of offering here, which is just as well, as we also receive a huge variety of enquiry types! Needless to say, that sometimes a good pinch of humour doesn’t go amiss either with some of the complexities of our work. We have so many diverse and wonderful characters here, all special and brilliant in their own ways. Its what makes us Finch.

In terms of Expert Witness work, we deal with civil and criminal matters, personal injury, occupational hygiene, mechanical, commercial, electrical – I could reel off a very long list, but instead I’ll leave links to our brochures at the end of this article that better explain the breadth of what we do when it comes to people, process and plant.

Just to give you an example, on Monday I received an enquiry for a HAVS (hand arm vibration syndrome) claim, and later that day a criminal matter involving a fatal crushing in the workplace. On Tuesday, I passed on a claim for Asbestosis to my fellow expert witness support team member Liz, and I took an enquiry for a CDM (construction design management) matter and an Agricultural livestock matter. Later that week: a workplace transport fatality, a gas explosion, a packaging machine dispute, a zip-wire injury and an assault in the workplace.

In the same week my colleague, Jade, who sits next to me is busy conducting introductory ‘phone calls with potential candidates for our latest vacancy, and Steph and Eden are beavering away at the latest posts for LinkedIn and planning our role at the next conference, while Becky is processing payments into and out of the business and researching facilities providers. Glenis is typing up a dictation and report formatting and Rachael is assisting Janine with coordination of our consulting projects. A hive of activity and skill.

Finch is a thoroughly interesting place to work, being surrounded by such a wealth of knowledge. I really enjoy being a Finch and being a part of our community, and it’s nice to share a small flavour of it with you, so thank you if you’ve taken the time to read this article.

Please do call us if you’re wondering if we can help in any way, and please come and visit us at the Nest, we’d love to host you.

* Collective Noun – CHARM: A charm of colourful finches flitted among the trees
