Melvin was an Inspector with the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for 16 years. He worked as a regulatory inspector in the food, agriculture and woodwork industries and latterly in the HSE’s Entertainment and Leisure Sector.
His main areas of expertise are in the entertainment and leisure industry. He was HSE’s operational policy lead for fairgrounds and theme parks for 7 years. He provided expert advice and opinion to numerous HSE and local authority investigations, enforcement and prosecutions in areas as diverse as theme parks, theatre ceiling integrity and zip wires.
Melvin has wide, working experience in the applicability, interpretation and appropriate use of standards, guidance, legislation and enforcement in the leisure industry; he was the lead author for numerous HSE guidance documents including HSG 175. He trained and managed the work of HSE’s National Fairground Inspection Team.
Recently he has been involved in reviewing the safety standards for multi car roller coasters, inflatable play equipment and water based rides.
