Alex has 30 years of experience in the field of amusement park operations and amusement ride and device safety, with significant expertise in the full life-cycle of procurement, specification, construction, installation, certification, operation, inspection and maintenance of large and complex amusement rides. He previously worked as Technical Director for one of the UK’s best known amusement parks and now runs his own consultancy business acting as an independent consultant to the fairground and amusement park industry, and similar industries.

Alex regularly acted as a quasi-expert witness for his previous employer in civil cases and, since becoming an independent consultant, has provided expert and joint expert evidence, alongside HSE experts, in criminal prosecutions. He has been a member of UK and international industry safety committees throughout his career and is a trusted source of information, expertise and opinion to both the industry and its regulator, HSE.

Alex’s main areas of expertise are in the practical application of HSG 175, pre-use and in-service inspection requirements, safe operation of rides and passenger safety. He has actively participated in the production of industry Standards BS EN 13814 and BS ISO 17842, in addition to UK industry guidance including HSG 175.

He frequently consults for and advises a wide range of dutyholders within the fairground and amusement park industry over safety, technical and operational issues, together with providing training in similar related matters. Alex holds an Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and is a Chartered Engineer.

Alex regularly presents at safety seminars, both domestically and internationally, discussing a wide range of safety-related issues including installation and commissioning of new rides, human factors and safe evacuation procedures, amongst many topics.
