It’s complicated – noise exposure assessment of Fireman

Noise Exposure Assessment

A person’s noise exposure can have routine and random elements. An extreme example on which a Finch acoustic engineering expert was instructed was that of a fireman at a busy aerodrome.

Sources of noise exposure alleged included fire alarms, building alarm sounders, fire engines and pumps, aircraft – jets and helicopters – taking off and landing, aircraft engine testing, and equipment tests.

Patterns of exposure were highly variable. Drawing on personal knowledge and experience, and research of technical sources, it was possible for the Finch expert to determine likely sound levels for the various sources, and to construct a range of scenarios of noise exposure to assist the Court.

The contribution of the fireman’s hobby of rallying to his lifetime noise exposure could also be estimated.
